What It Is

  • For those traveling to and from Orlando International Airport, the OIA Connector Light Rail Transit (LRT) would provide direct transportation to International Drive without the need for hailing a cab or negotiating busy, sometimes unfamiliar city streets.

Proposed Route

  • Simply stated, the OIA Connector Light Rail Transit would be a 14-mile long light rail system, connecting the Orlando International Airport with International Drive. The system is being planned as an extension of the North/South LRT project. What’s more, with proposed intermodal stations located along the route, passengers could connect to proposed commuter and high speed rail, as well as the proposed I-Drive Circulator transit system. Public and private ground transportation would also connect to the system.

Projected Timeline

  • The Alternative Analysis (AA) began in December 2003 and was completed in August 2005.  Eight initial LRT alternatives were identified for evaluation.  These alternatives were refined and amended based on comments received as part of the initial alternatives evaluation.  Ultimately, the Sand Lake Road corridor was selected as the recommended Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA).

Financial Considerations

  • The estimated cost for the project is approximately $617 million (2004 $). The OIA Connector is presently not included in METROPLAN ORLANDO’s LRTP, and local funding for the project has not yet been identified.
